Oh that’s not right…

flyinganimals-14So another Halloween has come and gone. Our 13th wedding anniversary was a success. The wife has a new job that she loves and the kid has a new school that she also loves (although the homework slightly less so). I reconnected with my brother and we’ve been playing SWTOR and talking over mumble. We’re starting what is probably one of the more politically incorrect guilds in recent memory so be sure to look for us on Anita Sarkeesian’s blog, Jezebel, and the View in the coming months as we attempt to explain that it’s all in fun and what the British mean by “taking the piss”. Our oven dying an untimely death by thunderstorm right before Thanksgiving notwithstanding, things are good.

As I pack away and make minor repairs on my Halloween decorations it’s also time to start coming up with ideas for next year. I need to redo my graveyard fence, not so much because it is need of repair but that it can be improved. I don’t think I can reattach the head to “the guy” who I had hung from a gibbet in the front yard. He’s been hanging from a tree limb or a gibbet for about five years now and a windstorm finally popped his head off. I could probably reattach the head but I’d never be able to hang him from it again.

Now the gibbet is very simple construction: two 4x4s in a slightly offcenter ‘T’ formation. Nothing special but great for hanging a body from. I like the hanged man idea and I’m cheap so the first thing that occurs to me is that I can still hang him from the gibbet. I just need to make it a nice even ‘T’ and then tie his arms to the crossbars with the rope he’d formerly been hung with. Simple…

And then I remember where I live. I’m contemplating putting what can only be considered a crucified skeleton in my front yard. Yeah, no way someone can take that the wrong way.

So I haven’t been keeping track of what I’ve been doing this year. I really need to be better about it but I’m going to try to at least post a daily status update for the next week as I get the last few bits up. So far I have up the following:

Scarecrow

  • Graveyard fence
  • Some graves
  • The scarecrow
  • The spiderweb
  • The hanged man
  • The cannibal witch

I’m making a ghost out of a zombie/ghoul that didn’t survive last year. I have most of the pieces but need to make a quick trip to the hardware store tomorrow morning for a few last minute supplies and some lighting that I’m missing.

I’m going to have the ghost up for sure and I’m going to do my best to get the graveyard gateposts and gargoyles up by this time next week.

Left to do

  • Ghost over garage
  • Better lighting for graveyard and flickering bulbs for the porch light
  • Gateposts for graveyard
  • Cobwebs
  • Fog machine system test
  • Burn another spooky music CD

I completely spaced on getting a projector this year so my idea of showing old silent horror movies (Nosferatu etc) projected onto the inside of the upstairs window will need to wait until next year. Although, as I write this, I realize that the words would be reversed when seen from the outside so sometime in the next year I’ll need to rip a set of movies from DVD and mirror them so they look right when viewed from the outside. I’ll just have to put a silhouette in the window with a strobe like I did last year.

Memento redux

Jyllian and I were talking the other day and she mentioned the “bug sack”. The “bug sack” was a set of green baby pajamas with little bees on it for the infant Emily but it didn’t have legs. It was just a sack on the bottom like the PJs Sweet Pea wore in the old Popeye cartoons but was my favorite thing to dress Emily in. I’d completely forgotten about it.

I’ve always sort of looked as life as pouring through me like water through a sieve. Sometimes things stick and change how it flows but mostly days are ephemeral things. Maybe it’s because I’m getting a little further on in years and I know that I won’t be around forever to sieve time’s passage but I wonder what it is that I no longer remember and whether I have too large a set of gaps in that sieve.

I know that I need to spend more time keeping track of what happens if only so I’ll have reminders of what my life was when I’m to old to remember without assistance.

Since it’s been a while, here’s the short list of things:

  • Emily is doing well with her choir
  • Making a concerted effort to get the yard under control
  • Quit EVE, started Rift, stopped Rift, playing EVE
  • Eating about 80% primal
  • Lost probably 15 pounds in the last three months.
  • Grumpiness is fading and seems to be replaced with a sunnier outlook but that could just be spring
  • Planning to run a guild in Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • Work is still work
  • Halloween work needs to get underway soon
